Art and Design

At Sandringham and West Newton Primary Academy, our approach to Art and Design is pivotal to fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a profound appreciation for the arts within our student community. Guided by the objectives of the National Curriculum and the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum, we strive to cultivate an enriching environment where every child can explore, create, and express themselves fully. Our commitment to delivering a high-quality art and design technology education is underpinned by the Essential Characteristics and Threshold Concepts, which form the foundation of our curriculum framework.

Our intent in delivering the Art and Design Technology curriculum at Sandringham and West Newton Primary Academy is threefold: to inspire our students, to equip them with essential technical skills, and to encourage independent creative expression. We believe that the arts are not merely a subject but a vital medium through which students can communicate their experiences, emotions, and ideas. Our curriculum engages learners in a journey that nurtures their innate creativity and prepares them to think critically about their work and the world around them.

In the implementation of our curriculum, children progress through carefully structured milestones aligned with the thresholds of artistic development. Each stage of learning is designed to build upon the previous one, allowing children to deepen their understanding of artistic processes while developing a robust skill set. Children are encouraged to delve into the Essential Characteristics of becoming an artist, thereby fostering their autonomy and enabling them to convey their individuality through their creations. These characteristics include the adept use of visual language, the fluency of communication in both visual and tactile forms, and the confidence to draw from observation, memory, and imagination.

As children navigate through various artistic methods, they learn to explore and invent marks, developing and deconstructing ideas with a perceptive approach. The importance of understanding the work of past and contemporary artists, craftmakers, and designers cannot be overstated. This knowledge not only enriches their learning experience but also inspires them to innovate and evolve in their own creative practices. Our pupils engage with the lives and works of significant figures in art history, allowing them to learn from the successes and methodologies of great artists across different periods and cultures.

In aligning our curriculum with the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum, we delineate our educational focus around three primary Threshold Concepts: developing ideas, mastering techniques, and drawing inspiration from the greats. The first threshold concept, “develop ideas”, encourages students to appreciate the iterative nature of artistic design, recognising that initial ideas can evolve significantly throughout the creative process. This understanding fosters resilience and adaptive thinking, enabling our learners to embrace experimentation and embrace the unexpected.

The second threshold concept, “master techniques”, underlines the importance of skill acquisition in the realm of art and design technology. This encompasses a wide range of techniques and disciplines—including painting, sculpture, digital media, and textile design—allowing students to develop a diverse skill set. As they progress, students learn to select materials, processes, and techniques with increasing inventiveness and skill, enhancing their ability to realise their artistic intentions effectively.

Finally, the concept of “taking inspiration from the greats” highlights the value of historical and contemporary influences in shaping an individual’s artistic journey. Children are guided to analyse and interpret the work of renowned artists, gaining insights into the creative processes that underpin outstanding art. Through this exploration, our pupils not only broaden their artistic horizons but also cultivate a deeper understanding of cultural contexts and aesthetic philosophies.

The impact of our Art and Design Technology programme is measured by the growth we observe in our children—not only in their technical proficiency but also in their personal development as creative thinkers and lifelong learners. By embedding reflective practices into our curriculum, we encourage students to analyse and critique both their work and that of their peers. This critical evaluation fosters a sense of ownership and accountability in their creative journey, allowing them to celebrate successes while also learning from challenges.

Furthermore, we are dedicated to instilling a passion for Art and Design Technology that transcends the classroom. Our students are encouraged to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities such as art clubs, exhibitions, and workshops, which further enhance their exposure to the arts and connect them with a broader community of artists and designers. These opportunities reinforce their commitment to the subject and inspire them to continue exploring their creative pursuits beyond formal education.

At Sandringham and West Newton Primary Academy, we recognise that art education is an essential component of a well-rounded curriculum. The skills and attributes fostered through our Art and Design programme are not only applicable within the realm of the arts but are also transferable to other subjects and aspects of life. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to communicate effectively in various forms are indispensable skills that prepare our students for future success.

We have an unwavering commitment to providing a high-quality educational experience that enables students to thrive as creative practitioners. By following the objectives of the National Curriculum and the framework provided by the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum, we empower our pupils to explore their artistic potential and cultivate essential characteristics that will serve them throughout their lives. It is our vision that each child at The Sandringham Federation not only becomes proficient in their craft but also develops a lifelong passion for the arts, equipping them to contribute meaningfully to both their local and global communities.
