Geography

Our Geography curriculum is designed to cultivate children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its diverse peoples, a curiosity that will remain with them throughout their lives. We aim to stimulate children’s interest and understanding of a variety of places, communities, resources, and both natural and human environments. This is complemented by a robust comprehension of the Earth’s significant physical and human processes, which are critical to understanding the dynamics of our planet.

The intent behind our Geography curriculum is not merely to teach geographical facts but to foster a deeper connection to the world around us, encouraging children to become not only knowledgeable learners but also responsible global citizens. We are particularly committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and engage with their local area of Sandringham and West Norfolk. In doing so, we seek to instill a profound sense of identity rooted in their heritage and an appreciation for what makes our local area unique and special.

Geography serves as a window through which children can explore their environment, learning about the interplay between human activities and natural processes. By addressing topics such as settlement patterns, physical landscapes, weather, and climate, we ensure that our curriculum is relevant and reflects the experiences of our children. Moreover, through the study of sustainable development and global issues, we are able to discuss the challenges faced by society today, effectively creating a sense of responsibility among our pupils for their role in shaping a sustainable future.

To implement our Geography curriculum effectively, we have devised a cohesive structure that allows for comprehensive coverage of the subject as well as deep learning. The teaching of Geography is designed to be engaging and dynamic, either being delivered in weekly lessons for half a term—alternating with History—or in concentrated blocks throughout the academic year. This versatility enables the children to immerse themselves in each subject, achieving depth and fostering retention of key concepts.

At the start of each topic, we encourage children to articulate what they already know, as well as what they aspire to discover. This process, often referred to as “assessment for learning,” allows us to tailor our programme of study to meet the varied needs and interests of our children. By taking into account their differing starting points and interests, we ensure that our lessons are not only relevant but also engaging.

In our commitment to embedded learning outside the classroom, we fully use our local surroundings and the wealth of resources available in Sandringham and West Norfolk. Field trips, interactive trips, and practical exercises are embedded into our teaching to offer children tangible experiences of the geographical concepts they are studying. These experiences serve to enhance their understanding, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world settings. Whether it involves exploring local coastal areas, undertaking surveys of land use in our community, or examining environmental conservation efforts, we aim to deepen the connection between children and their environment.

The impact of our Geography curriculum can be seen through the outcomes recorded in topic books and the overall engagement levels of our pupils. We maintain a broad and balanced Geography curriculum that offers a plethora of opportunities for children to demonstrate their acquisition of the key knowledge we have identified. At the end of each unit, children are encouraged to reflect on their learning journey and compare their knowledge of the subject matter to their initial understanding. This reflection not only nurtures a sense of accomplishment but also reinforces a continuous cycle of learning and self-improvement.

As children progress throughout the school, they develop an increasingly deep knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of their local area and its place in the wider geographical context. The skills and knowledge they acquire are not confined to the classroom; they develop critical thinking skills, inquiry-based learning, and the ability to engage with complex environmental and social issues. Our pupils become adept at making informed decisions and understanding the implications of those decisions within the context of their local environment and the wider world.

Furthermore, we regularly assess the effectiveness of our Geography teaching through observation, pupil feedback, and assessment of topic-based work. Children exhibit a range of geographical skills, including the ability to interpret maps, engage with statistical data, and undertake geographical investigations. This solid foundation prepares them for future studies and encourages lifelong learning in geography and related fields.

The Geography curriculum we offer is not merely an academic exercise; it is a holistic approach to education aimed at nurturing well-rounded individuals who appreciate the intricacies of the world around them. We seek to create enthusiastic learners who are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. Through our well-structured intent, diligent implementation, and ongoing evaluation of impact, we aim to inspire our pupils to become informed and engaged citizens, ready to participate in shaping their communities and the global landscape for future generations.
