At Sandringham and West Newton Primary Academy, we take great pride in our curriculum offer, particularly our commitment to Personal Development. Following our January 2023 Ofsted inspection, we were delighted to have our Personal Development provision described as outstanding. This acclaim is testament to the rigorous and well-structured personal development curriculum we provide, which is firmly rooted in several key principles. Through the comprehensive scope of our curriculum, we aim to equip our children with the ability and willingness to engage in eight essential behaviours that lay the foundation for success not only in their academic pursuits but also in their personal lives.

In this age of rapid change and constant stimulation, it is vital that we guide our children in exploring the world around them and developing their potential. Our curriculum encourages them to embrace opportunities for growth, whilst recognising that success is often the result of sustained effort, resilience, and an eagerness to learn. We believe that by nurturing these traits, our pupils will emerge as well-rounded individuals ready to thrive in their future endeavours.

One of the fundamental principles of our curriculum is to encourage children to try new things. It is often said that success does not merely arrive at our doorstep; rather, we must actively seek out experiences that foster personal achievement. Finding a talent or an area of interest can significantly boost a child’s confidence. It is crucial to provide our pupils with a broad and rich curriculum that caters to diverse interests, especially since they may not always excel in traditional academic subjects. We aim to teach them that enjoyment in what they do is often the key to success; successful individuals do not rely on external rewards for motivation but are driven by a genuine passion for their activities.

Equally important is the principle of working hard. While this notion may not resonate well with every young person, understanding the value of diligence is essential. True accomplishment often requires sustained practice and commitment, and we encourage our pupils to embrace hard work as a natural part of the learning process. In a society often enamoured with the idea of overnight success, it is paramount that we instil in our children the reality that mastery of a skill or subject typically comes only after considerable effort.

The ability to concentrate in an increasingly distracting environment is another skill we prioritise in our curriculum. Modern children are surrounded by an almighty array of stimuli, from television adverts to social media, and it has never been more crucial to teach them effective concentration techniques. While many teachers stress the importance of focus, fewer provide explicit instruction on how to achieve it. Our commitment is to enable pupils to develop sustained attention and comprehension, which are vital skills both inside and outside the classroom.

Children must also learn the importance of pushing themselves beyond their comfort zones. The ability to overcome reluctance and challenge oneself is imperative for achieving desired goals. For instance, many adults understand that physical fitness is only achieved through consistent effort, and the same principle applies to academic and personal growth. Our curriculum encourages children to confront their fears and insecurities, helping them to push through obstacles such as shyness or the fear of failure. This resilience is key to unlocking a successful future.

The principle of imagination plays a significant role in our personal development curriculum. Studies, including those conducted by George Land in 1968, illustrate that children possess remarkable creative potential, which unfortunately declines with age if not nurtured. We recognise that fostering creativity is essential to children’s continued success. By encouraging imaginative thinking, we aim to ensure that our pupils maintain their ability to generate ideas and solutions, reinforcing the notion that creativity is an indispensable asset in their educational journey.

Moreover, we advocate for the concept of improvement. Successful individuals are characterised by their desire to continually enhance their skills and results. They understand that greatness is not attained in monumental leaps, but through incremental progress. Thus, we strive to imbue our pupils with the understanding that constant refinement is essential, teaching them that little adjustments can culminate in significant achievements over time.

Another significant aspect of our curriculum involves helping children understand others. Drawing on Aristotle’s notions of ‘sophia’ (worldly wisdom) and ‘phronesis’ (the application of wisdom in service to others), we highlight the importance of empathy and social responsibility. Successful individuals use their knowledge not only for self-gain but also to contribute meaningfully to society. By encouraging our children to look beyond themselves and consider what they can offer to others, we cultivate a sense of community and social consciousness.

Lastly, we reinforce the significance of resilience through the principle of not giving up. Every individual, regardless of their achievements, faces adversity, setbacks, and criticism. It is paramount that our children recognise that encountering challenges is a universal experience, and they can learn from others’ experiences of failure and perseverance. By sharing stories of resilience—both from their peers and adults—they will develop a more profound understanding that persistence in the face of difficulties is a defining characteristic of success.

Our approach links these guiding principles to a tiered framework, rewarding children for their achievements. Children are encouraged to earn bronze, silver, and gold badges that may be worn on their uniforms as a testament to their progress. We carry out reviews of each child’s development on a termly basis, culminating in badge awards during end-of-term assemblies. This system not only celebrates individual accomplishments but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and collective achievement among students.

The Sandringham Federation Personal Development Curriculum, inspired by the Chris Quigley Essentials framework, establishes a comprehensive and nurturing environment for our children. By focusing on these eight core principles, we empower our children to explore their potential, develop resilience, and ultimately, become successful individuals who contribute positively to society. We invite parents and guardians to partner with us in this vital aspect of their children’s education, ensuring that they not only excel academically but also grow into well-rounded, fulfilled individuals prepared to navigate the complexities of the modern world.
