Supporting Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing

At Sandringham and West Newton Primary Academy, we understand the crucial role that mental health and wellbeing play in the holistic development of our children. The pressures of modern life and the ever-changing educational landscape can often weigh heavily on young minds. Therefore, we are committed to fostering an environment where children feel safe, valued, and supported.

To this end, our academy employs a multi-faceted approach that incorporates teaching emotional literacy, promoting resilience, and providing access to mental health resources. We begin by equipping our children with the language and skills necessary to express their feelings and understand the emotions of their peers. Through dedicated sessions focused on emotional literacy (PATHs), children learn to articulate their thoughts and feelings more effectively, allowing them to communicate openly about their mental health needs.

In addition, we have integrated wellbeing into our everyday curriculum. Teachers are trained to recognise signs of emotional distress and are encouraged to incorporate discussions around mental health into their lessons. By doing so, we normalise the conversation around mental health, allowing children to feel more comfortable seeking help when needed. Furthermore, by integrating wellbeing into various subjects, we can cultivate a more comprehensive understanding of self-care, empathy, and community support.

Our school also places a strong emphasis on resilience-building activities. We recognise that the ability to cope with challenges is a crucial life skill. Regular social and emotional learning sessions provide children with the tools to manage their emotions and navigate difficulties. Activities such as role-playing scenarios, group discussions, and mindfulness exercises cultivate resilience, teaching children to bounce back from setbacks and approach challenges with a growth mindset.

Central to our commitment to mental health is the establishment of strong supportive networks within the school community. Our staff includes designated mental health leads who liaise with external agencies to ensure that families have access to the appropriate resources and support services. These professionals work closely with teachers, parents, and the local health authorities to create a coordinated approach to mental health and wellbeing. This collaborative effort not only facilitates timely intervention when signs of distress arise but also provides a robust framework of support during periods of individual or collective adversity.

In alignment with our holistic approach, we also actively encourage parental involvement. We host workshops and seminars designed to educate parents about the signs of mental health issues and strategies for fostering resilience at home. By empowering parents with knowledge and resources, we create a cohesive support network that extends beyond the classroom, reinforcing the message that mental health is a shared responsibility.

To further promote wellbeing, we offer various curriculum enrichment activities that encourage physical health, creativity, and social interaction. Sports, arts, and outdoor learning experiences not only enhance physical health but also contribute to improved mental wellbeing. Regularly engaging in these activities allows children to express themselves in diverse ways, providing an essential outlet for their emotions and fostering a sense of belonging.

At Sandringham and West Newton Primary Academy, we are fully committed to nurturing the mental health and wellbeing of our children. By embedding mental health awareness into our curriculum, fostering resilience, and creating an inclusive and supportive environment, we are laying the foundation for a generation of emotionally intelligent and well-adjusted individuals. It is our belief that by prioritising mental health, we not only enrich the lives of our students but also empower them to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
