Reception Class

Welcome to Reception at Sandringham and West Newton.  Your child’s well-being is at the heart of what we do.  It is important to us that they are settled and happy when coming to school, and this is our main priority throughout the first half term.  We endeavour to encompass the school rules of ‘Ready, Respectful, Safe’ during this time, so that school can be enjoyed by all.  The children love playing and exploring in our stimulating continuous provision and are respectful of this, helping to tidy and maintain the areas.  Our classroom environment supports and encourages independence.  Being willing to give things a go is encouraged, along with a growth mindset and developing resilience.

Story times and nursery rhymes are valued within our setting.  We prioritise communication and language and developing vocabulary.  We aim to provide a successful balance between accessing the continuous provision and more formal learning inputs.  This is designed to impart specific knowledge and understanding, enabling the children to learn new skills which they can transfer into their own learning and play.  Our focused learning times are gradually progressed over the course of the timetable and include phonics, maths, reading and topic-based inputs.  We have an open communication with parents through the online learning journal tapestry.  This is used to document learning throughout the year along with some recordings in books.

The reception class starts together full time in September of the year in which they are five.
The Little wandle phonics scheme is used to support reading and writing. Children build up a phonics library of sounds in their book bag and parents can support the classroom work by helping the child finish the colouring, learn the action that accompanies the sound and also the correct letter formation in writing.
The children learn to read using the Little Wandle books.  The books are used during supported reading sessions during the school day and are sent home each day for the children to read with parents.
Most of the learning is supported through guided and child initiated play.

Children are celebrated within our class following the PATHS (Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies) child of the week.  This also supports developing confidence and children’s emotional intelligence.  We have strong links with the local Church, with Father Paul regularly visiting for our collective worship.  We also participate in harvest, Christmas and Easter services, as well as the Nativity.

We also have just received permission to recommence our Nursery provision, which used to work in conjunction with the  Sandringham and West Newton preschool. The preschool in the village has now closed, so we will shortly be offering places for  children for the term in which they are 4. This can be for mornings/ afternoons or the whole day. We take children in,  in the first week back after each half term. we have a maximum of 8 places. For information please call the school office.

Forest School fun!

Posted on June 28th, 2018

We are really enjoying our weekly Forest School sessions. This week Lee showed us how to do some Japanese ‘Forest Art’. We had to collect a handful of fresh leaves from the trees…Lee encouraged us to choose leaves of varying shapes and sizes. We were given a piece of material which we folded in half, with a leaf placed in the middle. By hammering the material carefully but firmly we could see the shape of the leaf appear through the material…it took quite a lot of hammering! When we opened the material up the leaves had printed symmetrically. This process was repeated with a variety of leaves.

The next task was to find a stick that measured the same as the width of the material and attach the cloth using tape. Finally we added a length of string before finding a suitable branch to hang them on. They looked fabulous dancing in the breeze!

New pupils visit our Reception class

Posted on June 28th, 2018

It was lovely to welcome our new pupils, who will be joining our school family in September, into school this morning. They joined Mrs Berry, Mrs Garrard and our existing children for a morning of fun, and were supported by Alison from West Newton Pre-School group for this first session. Two more transition sessions will take place over the next few weeks, and all new families will be offered a Home Visit too.

We hope they all enjoyed their first morning!

Our visit to the Sealife Centre and Old Hunstanton beach

Posted on June 19th, 2018

We had a fabulous visit to the Sealife Centre last week. We saw lots of fascinating sea creatures and learned many interesting facts, especially during our ‘Rockpool workshop’. Did you know that a starfish can survive with only one arm, and that it can grow new arms?

After we finished in the Sealife Centre we got back on the coach and went to Old Hunstanton. We ate our picnic on the beach and then spent the rest of the afternoon playing on the sand. We had a competition to build a perfect sandcastle and collected lots of shells to take back to school. We all had a lovely day and, as always, the children were a pleasure to take out.

Hunstanton trip – beach, bakery and beautiful sea creatures!

Posted on June 14th, 2018

A wonderful day out was had by Reception and years 3 and 4  on Tuesday 12th June, with our trip to Hunstanton. Children enjoyed time at the rock pool and in the aquarium at the Sealife centre, followed by lunch on the beach and games. Year 3 and 4 also made beach sculptures and had a really interesting time at Mr Bun the Baker, finding out about life as a baker and even making their own doughnuts. Read all about it in the Hunstanton town guide, link below.

The ‘Big Build’!

Posted on May 25th, 2018

To bring our theme of ‘Castles, Knights and Fairytales’ to an end we invited our parents into the classroom to join their children for a ‘Big Build’ session. The children were asked to design a castle as part of their homework and collect together the resources they would need for their model.

It was great that so many parents were able to join us on Monday afternoon this week. Everybody enjoyed the afternoon and today the children have proudly visited the other classrooms to show their castles to the rest of the school.

Well done everyone and thank you to our lovely parents for coming in to support our learning.
